Paver calculator

How many pavers do I need?

Enter your patio’s shape and measurements to get its area. Add a paver size and an extra-material allowance for a whole-paver count. Optional details add edge restraint, base, bedding, and dig depth. Nothing is prefilled or guessed.

How this paver calculator works

What it calculates

  • Area from your shape: length × width, side², π × (diameter ÷ 2)², or the outer rectangle minus the cut-out corner for an L-shape.
  • Whole pavers = area × (1 + your extra %) ÷ one paver’s face area, rounded up. Preset sizes are nominal inches.
  • Edge restraint = only the edges you mark as open. A free-standing patio uses its whole perimeter; edges against a house or curb are left out.
  • Base and bedding volume = area × the depth you choose. Dig depth = base + bedding + paver thickness.
  • Packages and cost in Store Mode use the package size and price printed on the product you pick.

What it does not assume

  • No default extra-material percentage, base depth, bedding depth, or product price. Missing inputs stay pending instead of becoming zero.
  • Paver count is a face-area estimate. It doesn’t model laying pattern, joint width, borders, or individual cuts.
  • Volumes are compacted, in-place footprint volumes. Loose material compacts, and installers often extend the base past the paver edge, so ask your supplier how much to order.
  • Joint sand coverage varies by product, paver size, and joint width, so the bag count uses the coverage printed on your bag.

Choosing depths

Paver manufacturers publish their own base and bedding requirements, and they differ. For example, one manufacturer’s guide lists a 4 in minimum compacted base for patios and another suggests 6–8 in. Soil, drainage, frost, and use all matter. The 4, 6, and 8 in (100, 150, 200 mm) choices here are planning options, not recommendations. Sand-set installation guides commonly call for about 1 in (25 mm) of screeded bedding sand; permeable pavers use a different system.

Before you dig

Contact 811 a few business days before any digging so buried utilities can be marked. Permit, setback, drainage, and frost-depth rules vary by city and county; check with your local building department. Slope the finished surface away from your house.
