Gravel calculator

How much gravel do I need?

Measure your path, patio base, or driveway area, choose a depth, and get the volume in cubic yards and cubic feet. Add your supplier’s weight figure to see tons. Nothing is prefilled or guessed.

How much extra do you want to order?Covers spreading losses and settling. Gravel that is rolled or driven on compacts; how much depends on the stone, so ask your supplier. Nothing is added until you choose.

Weight (optional)Many yards sell gravel by the ton. Weight per volume depends on the stone, its size and moisture, so we only show weight when you enter your supplier’s figure.

Add landscape fabric to the shopping list?Optional. Listed at the net area; seam overlaps follow the fabric maker’s instructions.

How this gravel calculator works

What it calculates

  • Area of each part you measure (rectangle, square, circle or L-shape), minus any parts you leave out.
  • Volume = area × depth, shown in cubic yards and cubic feet (or m³ and litres).
  • Order volume = volume × (1 + the extra you choose).
  • Weight = order volume × your supplier’s weight per volume, only if you enter it.
  • Bags or loads in Store Mode, from the size printed on the bag or quoted for a load.

What it does not assume

  • No default depth, extra percentage, or weight per cubic yard. Missing inputs stay pending.
  • No universal compaction factor. Different stones settle differently; your supplier knows their product.
  • No pavement design. Driveway base depth depends on soil, drainage and traffic.

Worked example: a 10 × 20 ft path, 3 inches deep

  1. Area: 10 ft × 20 ft = 200 sq ft.
  2. Depth: 3 in = 0.25 ft. Volume = 200 × 0.25 = 50 cu ft.
  3. In cubic yards: 50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 cu yd.
  4. With 10% extra chosen: 55 cu ft, or 2.04 cu yd to order.
  5. If the yard says the product weighs 1.4 tons per cu yd: 2.04 × 1.4 = 2.85 tons.
  6. In 0.5 cu ft bags instead: 55 ÷ 0.5 = 110 bags.

Pure arithmetic: 100 sq ft × depth in feet ÷ 27. Multiply by your area ÷ 100. Before any extra or compaction allowance.
